What this site is

KyotoStay is an independent hotel comparison site focused on accommodation near Kyoto Station in Japan. We publish structured, data-driven comparisons of hotels, ryokan and guesthouses — sorted by exact walking distance from the station gates rather than vague proximity claims.

The site targets English-speaking travellers arriving or departing by Shinkansen or JR, who want to make a quick, informed booking decision.

Who runs it

KyotoStay is an independent publication. The owner researches and manually verifies hotel data — walk times, station exits, access types — rather than relying on automated scraping or OTA data feeds.

How we measure walk times

Walk times are measured from the stated station exit (e.g. Karasuma Central Gate, Hachijō Exit) to the hotel entrance using OpenStreetMap walking-route data, rounded to the nearest minute. Each property is checked individually — not estimated from a postcode centroid or hotel district.

We define “near the station” as within 1,200 metres (roughly 15 minutes on foot). Hotels beyond this threshold are not included in comparisons.

How we earn money

KyotoStay participates in the Booking.com Affiliate Programme. When you click a “Check availability” link and complete a booking on Booking.com, we earn a commission at no additional cost to you. This is how independent comparison sites like this one sustain themselves.

Our editorial rankings are based solely on walk time, review score, and stated methodology — not on commission rates or paid placement. Hotels are never ranked higher because they pay us more.

Data accuracy

Hotel data on this site (walk times, review scores, prices) is manually curated and reviewed periodically. Review scores are sourced from Booking.com and displayed as published — we do not adjust or editorially modify them. Prices are indicative tiers only; actual rates fluctuate with dates and availability.
